As album titles go, Love Boredom Bicycles is a doozy indeed. What’s better, it sounds like Bakers Eddy had a right hootenanny recording it. Bursting with youthful energy, swagger, a bucket load of hooks and an irresistibly charming sense of humour, you’d be forgiven for thinking the band members have been cracking jokes and riffing licks together since they were kids.
That’s because they were. Having been a band since they were 12-year-old whippersnappers in Wellington, the now-Melbourne based four-piece are all grown up and ready to rumble. Having recorded an EP’s worth of material, the band started to question their direction. The tough decision was made to scrap the EP and start fresh in a new direction. The results… Love Boredom Bicycles.
Opening with the one-two punch of Concertina and Hi-Vis Baby – the latter an ode to cycling in the fast lane – it feels like the band is daring you to try and keep up with their tightly wound, jack-hammer paced songs. And the energy never wanes. In capturing the exuberant spirit of their live show, Bakers Eddy have gifted us a bevy of songs with good times coursing through the veins.
