Three friends in a bedroom. Some amps, some beers and a love of nostalgic garage pop. What could go wrong? DMA’s are Johnny Took, Matt Mason and Tommy O’Dell – mates with a gift for writing music which is as immediately anthemic as it is emotionally affecting. Early fan favourites such as Lay Down, In The Air and Delete became rallying cries for fans: arms around shoulders, fists in the air, all-in sing-alongs. The sort of rock ’n’ roll that hits you deep in the gut.
The band’s sound evolved with their euphoric synth-tinged third album, the UK Top 5 hit The Glow, which NME described as “a hyper-charged record of dance and decadence”. And DMA’s have continued to go from strength-to-strength ever since.
The band’s last UK tour saw them play to a combined audience of 65,000 people, including a 10,000 capacity sold-out London show at the prestigious Alexandra Palace. They also won three major honours, most notably Album Of The Year and Rock Album Of The Year at the 2021 ARIA Awards. 2021 also saw DMA’S return to their rock roots with the surprise EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You – a harbinger of the ear-rattling goodness to come.
