It was a time of skinny jeans, checkerboard vans and indie sleaze. But 2012 was also the moment Brisbane outfit DZ Deathrays – comprised of frontman Shane Parsons and drummer Simon Ridley – disrupted the universe with an ear-wrestling pearler of a debut album, Bloodstreams. Despite being newcomers, the pair would go on to win the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock / Heavy Album that year.
A lot of riffage has flowed under the bridge since those heady days: not least 2014’s album Black Rat, which would spawn the band’s then crowning single Gina Works At Hearts. The beloved thrash-party headbangers – now a trio – would deliver their fourth studio album Positive Rising: Part 1 in ’19, with its hotly anticipated sequel Positive Rising: Part 2 dropping in 2021- an album that would prove the yang to Part I’s yin.
In true maverick fashion the band teamed up with wine purveyors Built To Spill to create a special edition DZ Deathrays Positive Sparkling Crement – a full-bodied party fiz (with a hint of gritty punk) sourced from Margaret River’s finest vineyards to keep fans on their toes. 2022 heralded the release of the 10-year anniversary deluxe edition of Bloodstreams. What will the band throw up next is anyone’s guess, but what’s certain, it’ll be a belter.
