Maple Glider

For a young Tori Zietsch (better known as Maple Glider) music was never about trend or fashion – it was freedom. Brought up in a restrictive religious household, music came with existential gravitas. Relocating to Melbourne, Zietsch subsequently spent years overseas exploring the world and herself and returned with the songs that would become her debut album, To Enjoy Is The Only Thing (2021).

Traversing the supple and gossamer line between folk and country, Maple Glider shares vignettes of her life: growing up in a restrictive religious household, dislocation, the new perspectives travel can bring along with the alienation of being away from the familiar.

But mostly these are piano and guitar-soaked paeans to love – beginning, middle and end. In the words of Pitchfork: “Tori Zeitsch’s music aches with loss. The threadbare folk the Melbourne-based singer and songwriter makes as Maple Glider is skeletal in the most literal sense – absent of flesh, only intermittently lively, spare by necessity rather than choice.”
